Roomba Combo
Dec 2019 - Sep 2020
The first combo robot crafted by iRobot seamlessly integrates with the established design language
Historically, iRobot has designed vacuuming and mopping to be done by individual specialized robots to deliver the best cleaning experience. As the RVC technology advances and the competition diversifies, we recognize an opportunity to satisfy users who seeking the convenience of a combined vacuum and mop device. The Roomba Combo is the company’s first Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM) program to adapt, accelerate, and excel in the 2in1 robot category.

Design Challenges & Process
A “Mission-impossible” Platform
Tackling the intricacies of the vendor-provided robot platform proves challenging, given its distinct differences in form, UIUX, CMF, and accessories compared to the current iRobot product lineup. To initiate the design process, we placed it in direct comparison with our existing robots with the established design language, fostering a collaborative ID brainstorming session.

The Top 6 Must Change
After a few rounds of brainstorming sessions and rounds of feasibility checks with the vendor. The team concluded the top 6 must change items are - faceplate ID, UI location, bin/tank latch IDUX, air vent ID, overall pad design, and the overall CMF.
Adapting the existing design language to the given platform proves to be a formidable task. Our approach involves recalculating the volume for the nucleus, outer ring, logo, and their respective locations based on the established design language ratio. Subsequently, we carefully fine-tuned the thickness of the outer ring to seamlessly accommodate the new UI design and its placement.

Addressing the challenge of integrating the split line into the faceplate geometry, all the while preserving the dust bin access UX and adhering to the nucleus design language, proves to be another intricate aspect of our design process.
Top ID & CMF & UI Lock
To initiate production tooling, we finalized the ID, CMF, and UI by reshaping the entire faceplate geometry, redesigning and repositioning the robot UI, incorporating the iR logo, and transitioning the CMF to a clean slate gray color with a satin finish for a premium look and feel. Additionally, we updated the water tank button icon indication to improve discoverability.

Bottom CMF Lock
As altering the bottom geometry falls outside the project scope, our primary emphasis was on refining the CMF of the robot's underside. After several rounds of exploration, the team settled on the final CMF, as shown on the right. Notable updates were made to the cleaning roller, side brushes, mopping pad, and pad stitching. Additionally, we proposed the inclusion of a small caster wheel in the pad area, enhancing the robot's traverse and navigation capabilities based on the lab testing.
